Pre-Conference Session: ComB Treatment Intensive for Adults
This session is an add-on and must be paid for in addition to conference registration. For adults (over 18) with a BFRB only.

Cost: $150.00 (in addition to conference registration)
For adults with a BFRB, this special add-on to the conference is a unique opportunity to develop a personalized plan for recovery with two top-treatment providers for BFRBs. Utilizing the ComB model, participants will gain new perspective on the role each individual's BFRB serves in their life, understanding why, where and how a person engages in their BFRB so that individualized interventions can be selected to help the person achieve what they want to achieve without engaging in the behavior. The comprehensive behavioral (ComB) model, developed by Dr. Charles Mansueto and his colleagues, is based on the assumption that a person engages in their BFRB because it meets one or more need in the individual (e.g., helping to relax, to fall asleep, or to feel like a goal was accomplished). This three-hour intensive is limited to 40 participants and is offered as an add-on to the conference itself--please make sure to register for the conference if you register for this pre-con.

For Skin Pickers: Recovery by Exerting Effort and Letting Go. How I was Granted Recovery from Skin Picking in 6 Steps
After unrelenting, daily skin picking for 30 years, I attended my first TLC Retreat. That experience began a journey of exploration and the pursuit of recovery from skin picking. And what I learned was that I couldn’t stop on my own. I couldn’t white knuckle the behavior away. I took me two years of learning, and working, and being willing to stop, and then totally letting go of the result. To this day, I don’t try not to pick. It just has become something that I don’t do anymore.

Having a body-focused repetitive behavior is more than just about skin, hair or nails. Many times struggling with BFRBs can affect your mood, your activities, your relationships and the way you feel about yourself. Hear about the different ways that BFRBs might be affecting your life. Then learn about what you may be doing that seems like a good idea, but might not so helpful. Want to talk about something BESIDES our BFRBs?  Kids, tweens, teens, and parents are invited to hang out over cookies and milk.  You'll be paired up with one other person for 2 minutes to answer a range of very unintimidating questions about yourself.  (What's your favorite thing to do on vacation?  Are you a morning person or a night owl?  If you could qualify for the Olympics, what sport would you enjoy competing in?)  Elaborations are all up to you.  Two minutes later you will shift over to another seat and get to know someone else with a fresh list of questions, or share about the ones you just told your last new friend.  We don't care.  You're in charge.  Parents can stick around their child or branch off at any time to a parents' only side of the room answering the same kind of questions via the same method.  We're planning to have a lot of fun and guarantee you'll leave the room with a lot of new friends.

Milk, cookies, and refreshments will be offered. Space will be provided for families to a relax, unwind, and chat with others as we wrap up day one of the annual conference.

For Parents of Skin Pickers: “What Not to Do.”
I started skin picking at age 13, and continued for the next 30 years. I had parents who were mortified by the behavior and did everything in their power to get me to stop…rewards, punishments, shaming, and “policing.” The result of my father’s constant scrutiny was to destroy our relationship, create such a profound shame in me that the only way I knew to regulate my fraught nervous system was to pick. And that I did for the next 30 years. Learn from someone who suffered it first hand, what NOT to do as a parent; what responses make the behavior more
active, and what kinds of support you can provide. But mostly, learn as a parent, how to let go of your child’s behavior for everyone’s sake.
